Doug is not happy when he is forced to take on a new apprentice to help redecorate the Waterhole. It makes him realise the difficulties of working for someone else. Philip goes to pieces when he discovers Julie's failed suicide attempt, leaving Beth to make an important decision on his behalf. Phoebe takes the psychiatrist's advice and desperately struggles to keep Mark away from his brother when Stephen lapses into a fugue - despite Mark's determination that they should meet to resolve their problems.
